FARM-Africa

May 2010

Dear Subscriber Name,

In western Kenya, families often have less than one acre of land on which to produce enough food to feed themselves.  FARM-Africa is working in this area to help farmers to get more out of their small plots of land.  In this update you can read about how farmers are learning to increase their cassava harvest and how our Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) in the area are working to keep livestock healthy and more productive.

New Cassava Project

Thanks to the support of the National Farmers Union (NFU) through the Africa 100 Appeal, FARM-Africa is helping farmers in Ugenya and Nyanza districts to grow larger, disease-free harvests of the staple crop cassava.

The introduction of a new variety of cassava aims to enable 3,825 households to produce more, healthy cassava.

Community Animal Health Workers expand their knowledge

Last month, over 30 new Community Animal Health Workers in western Kenya received the second phase of their training, aimed at expanding their knowledge of animal diseases and how to prevent and control them.

The practising CAHWs also used this opportunity to share their first-hand experiences and the challenges they have come across in their work so far.
