FARM-Africa Home

FARM-Africa works with poor African farmers, helping them to produce more food for their families. We want to make sure future generations don't have to depend on handouts of aid.

Approaches

Our Grassroots Programmes continue to test innovative approaches to natural resource management whilst our Outreach Programmes communicate the results of this work to different audiences by different means. Training Advisory Units - core teams of experts drawn from programmes - will address this, offering training and technical advice, participating in networks, working to influence policy and disseminating lessons using the latest communication methods.

We have also identified a number of processes and cross-cutting issues that impact profoundly on rural development and integrate them into our programmes where appropriate.

Processes of Rural Change

From our work with marginal farmers and herders in Africa, we have developed some common approaches that promote positive change in rural areas.

Farmer and Beans
  • Participatory Planning, Management and Research - involving people in planning their own future - the basis for successful community development.
  • Capacity Building - developing the skills and expertise of communities, local institutions and government.
  • Strategic Partnerships and Collaboration - forming positive partnerships where skills can be shared and opportunities for advocacy increased.
  • Information Dissemination & Policy Dialogue - enhancing the impact of agricultural innovation and supporting policy change.
  • Input Supply and Market Access - providing access to information and inputs for marginalised farmers to increase productivity.
  • Sourcing Innovation - introducing innovative natural resource management techniques to promote productivity and increase living standards.
Our Work

Cross-cutting Issues

Many issues affecting the lives of farmers and herders are common regardless of whether they are pastoralists, smallholder farmers or communities relying on forests for their livelihoods. We work on these issues in the following ways.

  • Prepare and manage recurrent crisis and emergency situations
  • Focus on HIV/AIDS & reproductive health through linking with specialist agencies, offering advice and education where appropriate
  • Resolve disputes over shared resources through mitigation of natural resource-based conflict approaches
  • Become more gender-aware, particularly improving the status of women and ensuring gender-balanced development throughout our work
