13-year-old Thomas - a budding beekeeper
Lessons at Boay Primary School in northern Tanzania end at 3.20pm each day; however on Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays Thomas and his classmates have been going outside to gain practical experience in agriculture for an hour after school. Supported by his teachers, Thomas has learnt how to rear chickens and set up a small-scale tree nursery at home, as well as learning all about beekeeping.
Farm Africa has provided Boay school with beehives for stingless bees. Bees without a sting are perfect for teaching children all about beekeeping. Thomas and his classmates are looking forward to their honey harvest in September and are expecting each beehive to produce between one and three litres of honey. They are planning to sell the honey and use the money to invest in the expansion of their honey enterprise at school.
Thomas is also a member of the stingless beekeeping home working group, which helps pupils to share the skills they have learnt at school with other members of their family. Thomas’s parents did keep beehives in the forest, hung from trees, however they did not know that it was possible to keep bees at home. Thomas has received one of the beehives, distributed by Farm Africa and is looking forward to putting his newfound skills to use at home.
As well as beekeeping, Thomas has provided his mum with improved seeds and taught her about correct spacing and planting in rows using a rope. He is also planning to teach her about applying manure as a natural fertilizer. Thomas’s mum is very proud of her son’s good agricultural and environmental work at school and has bought him some seedlings as a reward.

I really liked it and would like to introduce the sting-less bees in my area. How do I go about it. Please let me know. I am a retired civil servant
Congratulations Thomas, well done. If you look after your bees they will work hard and help you--they work so hard every day, amazing. And good luck with your school work as well--the more you put in now the more it will pay you back in the future.
