Improving animal health services in western Kenya
Last month 27 men and women in Vihiga, western Kenya completed the third and final phase of their training to become qualified Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs).
Dr. Fredrick Njeru, who was working on the project said: ‘It’s been a long journey for the Community Animal Health Workers and they sang and danced after they received their certificates!’
During their final five days of training, CAHWs attended a field day where they practiced skills such as hoof trimming and deworming. They also received classroom training where they learnt how to identify and treat common livestock diseases in Vihiga.
These CAHWs can now provide farmers in Vihiga with a reliable and affordable animal health service, helping to ensure that animals do not succumb to easily treatable diseases. The role of these CAHWs is also to pass on their knowledge to farmers to ensure they are aware of common livestock diseases and how to control them.
