Africa 100 Apeal

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) launched the Africa 100 Appeal on 15 July in this, the NFU’s centenary year (www.Africa100Appeal.com).

Africa 100 AppealThe Africa 100 Appeal calls upon the agricultural community in the UK to give generously to support African farmers in increasing production of staple foods.

The funds raised will support farmer groups in East Africa in adopting proven and appropriate agricultural technologies that increase productivity.

Michael Palin

“As a Patron and long-time supporter of FARM-Africa, I applaud any help and involvement that the British Farming industry, through the NFU, can offer their counterparts in Africa.” Michael Palin

The funds raised through the Africa 100 Appeal will support farmer groups through FARM-Africa’s Maendeleo Agricultural Technology Fund (MATF). MATF funds innovative projects which support farmer groups in implementing proven technologies in crop, livestock and natural resource management that increase production from subsistence level to commercial level and also provide links to markets.

Hoeing the field To date MATF has funded 64 projects for example:
introducing new varieties of cassava and improved methods to farmers in Uganda has enabled them to increase cassava yields from 1 tonne per acre to 6.66 tonnes per acre and gross margins from around US$8 (£4) per acre to around US$354 (£179) per acre. This means that farmers who were previously dependent on food aid have now achieved food security and have cassava to sell.
