Programmes

Introduction

FARM-Africa aims to reduce poverty by enabling marginal African farmers and herders to make sustainable improvements to their well-being through more effective management of their renewable natural resources. We work in partnership with communities, governments, local organisations, international NGOs and the private sector to develop strong rural livelihoods and then share the results of our work with others for it to have maximum impact.

Map of operational locations in Africa

We work with a wide range of small-scale farmers and herders through our country programmes in eastern and South Africa. We focus on developing innovative approaches to natural resource management and communicating good practice to policy makers, government and non-governmental organisations. Our programmes are managed through two main offices in Africa, a Regional Office in Nairobi and a Country Office in Ethiopia. We have additional project staff in field offices near the communities we work with in Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Uganda and South Africa.

FARM-Africa's Approaches

In addition to our key themes, we have also identified a number of processes and approaches promoting rural change. Issues such as HIV/AIDS, gender, the resolution of conflict based on natural resources and emergencies have a profound impact on rural development and  are incorporated into our programmatic work where appropriate.

research and advocacy

To increase the impact of our grassroots work, we are increasingly involved in research and advocacy activities, aiming to improve both practice and policy.

From advocating the inclusion of pastoralists' voices in agricultural policy to lobbying governments for increased investment in small-scale agriculture, this vital aspect of our work makes a crucial link between the worlds of marginalised rural communities and decision-makers in national governments.
