FARM-Africa's 2008 Schools Appeal

Give Poverty the Boot!

Flore Primary School welly display

It’s a big ambition – but it couldn’t be simpler for your school to get involved and help us achieve it!  Almost two-thirds of people in Africa currently live in extreme poverty and we want you to help us change that.

FARM-Africa believes that one of the best ways we can help Africans to work themselves out of poverty is to equip their children with the knowledge, skills and support they need to do just that.  However, FARM-Africa’s specialist work goes well beyond the school gates – offering simple, practical assistance to those who need it most. Many families' survival is dependant on the food that they can grow on a tiny plot of land – improved seeds or help with irrigation from FARM-Africa can quite simply change their lives.

What do all farmers in the UK wear to work every day? Wellies of course! So we want you and your pupils to start with a welly and let your imagination run wild. To get started, just visit www.farmafrica.org.uk/givepovertytheboot for a whole range of fantastic ideas and resources to educate, inspire and excite your children about Africa and help them to raise some much needed money for our work.

changing lives

Rehema

Because of the support FARM-Africa gave her school, Rehema has learnt how to look after chickens – including building safe and warm coops, and giving them the right food to help them lay.

Rehema has also learnt to use chicken manure to fertilise crops. She taught her mother to do this, and now the plants they grow at home are producing much more food for the family.

Rehema’s teacher, Mr Utange says: “I thank FARM-Africa for its good work and I hope this project won’t end in our school, but that they will extend it to other schools for the benefit of the entire community.”

what your support could achieve

£150

could train and equip a local farmer as a “village vet” – providing crucial basic animal healthcare in their local community to prevent animals dying unnecessarily.

£250

could pay for tools and seeds for a school to set up a demonstration plot to teach local children how best to cultivate their crops.

£500

could provide a school in Africa with poultry, a chicken shed and feed so they can teach children how to rear chickens more effectively.

      Happy children
