Replenishing livestock in Ethiopia
FARM-Africa is helping pastoralists living in Hamer woreda in south west Ethiopia to cope with the effects of prolonged drought. The long dry season in 2009 meant people who rely on their livestock sales for survival lost many animals to starvation. FARM-Africa is now working to distribute goats to the most vulnerable families so they can continue to earn an income from their livestock.
Since July 2009, 275 people have been selected to receive goats from FARM-Africa and a further 25 people will be receiving camels to help replenish their livestock. Each person will receive eight goats and will give the first kids of their goats back to the project so more households can benefit. Over 1,000 goats have already been distributed and the project is still going strong.
Not only does goats’ milk provide a much-needed source of nutrition, but any surplus milk can also be sold at market, providing people with the income they need to feed their families. By breeding their goats, farmers can increase the size of their herd, a big herd is a valuable asset as farmers rely on livestock sales to buy food.
