Bale Eco-region Sustainable Management Project
The first Government – Community Forest Management Agreement has now been signed, marking a crucial step in establishing Participatory Forest Management (PFM) in the region.
The signed agreement outlines the roles, responsibilities and revenues of both the community and the Government Forestry Service, recognising both parties as joint forest managers. This is a step towards completing one of the projects key objectives of bringing local communities to the centre of decision making over the forests natural resources, helping them to strengthen their forest based livelihoods such as raffia weaving and beekeeping.
By recognising their role as a joint forest manager, the community is able to take the lead in addressing issues concerning the forest. The establishment of clear user rights mean that communities can invest in a range of forest products and turn them into profitable businesses.
FARM-Africa has been working with the local community and Government Forestry Service in Ethiopia since the late 1990s to establish PFM and it is on the verge of becoming mainstreamed across the country.
