Carbon trading: Carbon emissions trading refers to trading of carbon dioxide.  Under the Kyoto Protocal, large companies are assigned a quota of carbon that they are allowed to emit. If a company's emissions are more than the quota then it will need to buy carbon credits.  As forests capture carbon dioxide, they can provide these carbon credits.

Human Development Index ranking: Calculated by the United Nations Development Programme, this measure provides a composite measure of three dimensions of human development: living a long and healthy life (measured by life expectancy), being educated (measured by adult literacy and enrolment at the primary, secondary and tertiary level) and having a decent standard of living (measured by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) and income) (See also http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/)

Poverty line: a person’s income level established by the World Bank below which a person is held to be in extreme poverty. The international poverty line is $2 a day.

ProsopisProsopis : Prosopis juliflora. Non-native green shady tree which was introduced some 30 years ago in pastoralist areas of Africa.  It forms dense thickets that strangle native trees and prevent the growth of grass and shrubs underneath.

Naivasha Peace Accord:  Also named Comprehensive Peace Agreement.  This accord was signed on 9th January 2005 between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement who had waged a war of independence for most of the previous three decades in Southern Sudan.

Revolving loan fund:  Fund to which farmers repay their small loans with an interest rate, established by the farmers’ group. These repayments become available as loans to more group members which provide them with the credit to set up income-generating activities.
